It is open to visitors from 12 February to 11 November and is an essential place to visit with a fascinating history !
Not another castle, do I hear you say? Yes, but by discovering the unusual story of what happened within its walls, that you grasp the sheer power of the place. Perched on a volcanic rock, covering 3 hectares, its historic layout shows its importance in days gone by. The remains have been well-maintained and there are lots of interesting features to discover. The entrance is via several fortified gateways and a ‘souricière’ (literally a mousetrap, a small heavily guarded courtyard), illustrating the defence system of the period.

It all began with the Polignac family

Originally built as a stronghold by the Polignac family, the castle became a real empire in the 11th century. This French noble family, who marked the history of Velay and France, is remarkable for its long line of descendants.
The family was ever present in wars, alliances and life at court and several centuries later, the Seigneurs de Polignac were the most important of the 18 barons in the Velay region. Permanently in conflict with the diocese of Puy-en-Velay, the lords were seen as undisciplined rebels, yet they continued to extend their lands, wealth and royal contacts. The Comtesse Yolande de Polignac was a regularly visitor to the court of Marie-Antoinette and died of grief on learning of the queen’s death.
Just out of interest, King Louis XI imprisoned Vicomte Claude Armand XIV de Polignac for supporting an attempted rebellion of feudal lords. Another branch of the family continued its upward mobility to accede to the throne of Monaco as a Grimaldi.
