Cluny Abbey
Cluny - one of the greatest religious heritage centres in France.
Cluny Abbey was founded in 910 and played a major political role in history through its famous abbots like Richelieu and Mazarin. The abbey followed the Rule of Saint Benedict and served as a model for numerous monasteries throughout Europe, with its Romanesque church with arches up to 30 metres high. The majority of the buildings were destroyed after the Revolution but the Museum of Art and Archaeology houses the remains as well as a digital 3-dimensional reconstitution.
Basilica of Paray-le-Monial

The Basilica of Paray-le-Monial and its cloister are today one of the last and finest remains illustrating the power of Cluny abbey. Built in the 12th century, the church with 3 bell towers reproduces in miniature the architecture of the great abbey which disappeared after the Revolution.
Initially inhabited by Benedictine monks, the priory was converted into a basilica dedicated to the Sacred Heart. A guided tour points out the different architectural styles of the building which has one Gothic chapel and another Romanesque one.
