The Cirques
Reunion is a volcanic island. Several ancient collapsed volcanoes have left huge "holes" surrounded by mountains, known as "cirques".
Discover the heart of the island!
The 3 cirques, Mafate, Cilaos and Salazie, formed by landslides around the Piton des Neiges volcano, form a hiker's paradise.
Mafate, the authentic experience, is only accessible on foot. Entering from the east, you can also discover the Cirque Salazie. From the south, stop off at Cirque Cilaos. And finally, from the West, various options are possible, including, for seasoned athletes, passing by the village of Dos d'âne or Maïdo.
Cilaos is accessible from the west by a majestic winding route. It houses the island's thermal centre and also offers a wide choice of hikes. It’s also the main access point to the top of the island, Piton des Neiges.
Salazie, easily accessible from the east, is a lush cirque with its vegetation and numerous waterfalls. The village of Hell-Bourg, classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, is home to some splendid Creole huts. Salazie also offers the most accessible entry point to Mafate!
