Château de Meung-sur-Loire
The Château de Meung-sur-Loire is a castle with several different styles. The remains of 12th century towers stand side by side with an 18th century facade giving it a slight air of Versailles. Liberated by Joan of Arc after her victory at Orleans, the castle became a very prestigious fortified residence of the Bishops of Orleans visited by many great names from French history and later served as a prison.
For several years the château has been a private residence which opens to the public, allowing visitors to experience at first hand the everyday life of a château on the banks of the Loire. Regular events are held to bring the chateau back to life such as jousting tournaments and archery competitions. There are discovery trails for children including a rather disturbing one through underground passages beneath the castle…
