The Cascade des Jarrauds
Cascade des Jarrauds a pretty, 15-metre high waterfall
The Cascade des Jarrauds is at Saint-Martin-Château, in the south-west of La Creuse. A lovely, short walk through the woods leads to the view point where you can take lovely photos of this very pretty waterfall. Even before you get to the Cascade des Jarrauds, there are some fine views of the countryside and the River Maulde which provides a musical accompaniment all along the way.
The countryside is colourful and changes with the seasons and the path takes you through meadows, oak and pine trees and magnificent piles of granite boulders to the 15-metre high waterfall which dominates the steep, precipitous landscape.
Cascade des Jarrauds – a great place for a walk (GR4)

Now it’s time to take a break to learn about the history of the area which is the story of transporting electricity 14km to the town of Bourganeuf. The first electricity installation trials came to a successful end and Marcel Deprez, an engineer and physicist who specialised in « transmitting electrical power over long distances » put Bourganeuf on the map when it became the first town to use electricity produced a distance away. To know more about the fascinating story of electrification, we strongly urge you to visit the museum dedicated to the subject in Bourganeuf !
The Cascade des Jarrauds is well worth visiting. Listen to nature and the sound of the water on the 30 minute walk from the car park along the 1.1km path to the waterfall. The trail is well marked and maintained but is not suitable for visitors with reduced mobility (lots of steps).
Round off your visit to the Cascade des Jarrauds by a walk around the village of Saint-Martin-Château in the Vallée de la Maulde, just a few kilometres from Lac de Vassivière lake. The village has an unusual church with a separate square bell tower and a restaurant which serves delicious food every day except Tuesday throughout the year. Walkers should note that the Cascade des Jarrauds is close to the GR4 hiking path.
