Avallon and the collegiate church
An essential place to visit to discover Burgundy and the Pays du Morvan, Avallon is a paradise with a relaxed way of life in an idyllic setting. The town has a rich architectural heritage including a 12th century collegiate church and splendid mansions.
Stroll around the town and savour the tranquillity of its historic centre, around the Tour de l’Horloge. Walk up Rue Aristide Briand to Place Vauban and then along the ramparts.

The collegiate church is a Burgundian-Romanesque masterpiece of decorative sculpture with fine vaulting and portals adorned with different motifs. Its ‘column-statue’ is one of the oldest in France. One of the peculiarities of the church is its choir which is 2.5m below the portal.
Explore historic Avallon by following the frog trail marked on the ground which takes you past many fine buildings, through picturesque streets to marvellous viewing points, not forgetting the ramparts built by Vauban.
