Normandy

There are 2,300 rural gîtes in Calvados, Eure, Manche, Orne and Seine-Maritime. If you wish to find out more about this region, or search for a gîte in these areas, you can visit the Normandy Gîtes de France regional website at http://www.gites-de-france-normandie.com/index.php.

Contrasting with the rugged shores of the Cotentin Peninsula which brave the stormy moods of the Atlantic, the verdant hills and blossoming orchards located inland seem to beckon one to a life of gentle harmony. This sweet existence is nonetheless tinged sad nostalgia with on the World War II landing beaches, rightly remembered throughout the province. History is also present through a rich architectural heritage nestling among the loops of the River Seine - Château Gaillard, Jumièges Abbey, Claude Monet's "pink and green house" at Giverny - or in the pretty seaside resorts exuding Victorian charm.
Your stay in Normandy will leave you with fond memories indeed: the smiling country paths in Pays de Bray, the stark contours of the cliffs overlooking the Alabaster Coast, the turn-of-the-century atmosphere in Étretat with its monumental arch carved out of the chalk, the quaint seaside cemetery in Varengeville, the half-timbered cottages and farmhouses, the apple trees and dairy cows that have made the reputation of the Pays d'Auge, the Gothic Merveille on Mont-Saint-Michel or the Marais Vernier orchards at the foot of Tancarville bridge. These are but a few of the lovely sights Normandy has to offer. This region linking the Ile-de-France to the English Channel was a source of inspiration for clergymen, artists and adventurers! Ample proof is provided by Ango Manor, the Japanese water gardens in Giverny, Rouen Cathedral, the ruins of Jumièges Abbey and the imposing Château Gaillard, commissioned by the Duke of Normandy, Richard the Lionheart.
No self-respecting gourmet can resist a crispy slice of apple tart sprinkled with Calvados! And as you sit there sipping a glass of local cider, dip into a novel by Flaubert or Maupassant, whose works so wonderfully captured the spirit of Normandy and its inimitable grace.
