Limousin

For many centuries the Limousin has been the bastion of traditional arts and crafts, specialising in tapestry, lacemaking, enamels and porcelain. The workshops where artisans can be seen plying their trade make for a fascinating visit; they are concentrated in the cities of Aubusson, Limoges and Tulle.
The Limousin is also a paradise for anglers since it boasts 11,000 kilometres of first-category rivers, 700 kilometres of second-category rivers, 12,400 acres of reservoir lakes and over 3,000 natural lakes. The most common types of fish are trout, carp and grayling along with several carnivorous species.
This region was the cradle of Occitan art back in medieval times and it saw the emergence of Romanesque architecture. One typical manifestation of this trend was the octagonal bell-tower, superbly reflected in the abbey churches of Aubazine, Bénévent-L'Abbaye and St-Léonard-de-Noblat.
The Limousin offers a surprising range of landscapes: the valleys of the Dordogne and the Vienne, peat bogs on the Millevaches Plateau, moors and landes close to the Ambazac and Monèdières Mountains, Vassivière Lake... and many other topographical features.
Make your stay in the Limousin an opportunity to sample the delicious cuisine prepared with fresh regional produce and you will not be disappointed. The area is renowned for its excellent meat, trout, pike, crayfish, mushrooms and truffles. Two of the better-known specialities are bréjaude, a tasty broth made with smoked bacon and cabbage, and clafoutis aux cerises noires, a cherry cake. And, to work up an appetite, why not visit a nearby farmhouse or distillery? Or maybe take a walk to one of the local markets to covet the tempting wares displayed on colourful stalls?
