Everything here reminds you of nature, whether it be the rounded hilltops of the Vosges known as ballons, the Haute-Saône and its string of lakes, the Jura hillsides planted with vines or the city of Saint Claude and its pipemaking traditions.
This wooded area features many breathtaking landscapes and preserved parks like the Parc Naturel du Haut-Jura. Such lush vegetation can be ascribed to the presence of water... here, there and everywhere! Indeed, Franche-Comté is endowed with 5,350 kilometres of rivers, 80 lakes and 320 kilometres of navigable waterways, which can assume a variety of forms: the Hérisson cascades, the waterfalls of the Doubs and the Ognon or the pretty ponds and lakes gracing the Jura and Haute-Saône.
However, the roads inland are no less interesting and they will enlighten you on the rich cultural and architectural past of the region. The Royal Saltworks at Arc-et-Senans form a striking picture and feature on UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites. There are also a great many itineraries focusing on historical figures or themes such as Vauban's fortifications or the life of the great scientist Louis Pasteur. But, as everyone knows, all roads lead to Besançon, the capital of the province, where bustling city life is punctuated by the chimes of the huge astronomical clock dominating the square.
Perhaps the most rewarding route is the one leading you to a table laden with regional produce: pork sausages smoked with pinewood and juniper, ham, and an impressive number of cheeses (Morbier, Comté, Mont d'Or). All that remains for you to do is choose a suitable wine to accompany your meal - red, white, rosé or "yellow wine " (vin jaune), a speciality of the Jura with a nutty, almond bouquet reminiscent of Spanish sherry. You may also want to sample a glass of "straw wine" (vin de paille), a sweet wine made by storing the grapes in order to increase their sugar content.
