Languedoc-Roussillon

Languedoc-Roussillon

There are more than 3,250 rural gîtes to stay at in Aude, Gard, Hérault, Lozère and the Pyrénées-Orientales.

This region is ideal for nature and history lovers. The wild and natural stretches of Lozère countryside, the Tarn gorges, the Roman remains in Gard and the Cathar citadels in the Pyrénées are but a few of the stunning sights that will take your breath away. The beautiful Lozère landscape has been scarred and shaped by the ancestral movement of cattle and is also an area that boasts outstanding wildlife and acts as a reserve for previously endangered species that have been reintroduced to a natural habitat. The Cevennes area is also one that has maintained a traditional feel that visitors will fall in love with. If an important element of your holiday is water, why not take some time to learn how to master a boat or a canoe in the Tarn gorges? Located between Cevennes and Provence, is Gard, where the richness of Roman heritage and the Camargue coastal scenery are united in splendour. The coastline is spectacular. Wonderful, far-reaching beaches and superb icons of architectural heritage line the road to Carcassonne, the largest medieval city in Europe. There are vineyards and wine-growing estates situated all over this region – a delight for wine-lovers.

Some may think that Perpignan is all that the Roussillon region has to offer – they would be wrong: Tautavel is where the skull of the oldest-recorded European (450,000 years) was discovered and in Céret you’ll be able to take a look at works by some of the great names of contemporary art (Picasso, Matisse or Chagall) who were inspired by the Catalan light. Roman abbeys with peaceful cloisters and crenellated towers can be found perched on mountain-tops or nestled at the foot of the Canigou. Music lovers will be pleased to learn that renowned musical festivals are held in these monuments every year.
