Champagne Ardenne

Champagne Ardenne

530 rural gîtes await your arrival in the Ardennes, Aube, Marne and Haute-Marne regions. If you’d like to find out more about what’s happening in this area, or search for a gîte in any of these departements, you can visit the Champagne Ardenne regional Gîtes de France website. Ninety minutes from Paris, lying halfway between Burgundy and Belgium, the Champagne-Ardenne region is full of Eastern promise, offering a welcome change of scenery to nature, history and sport enthusiasts alike.
Two towns stand at the gateway to this province: the royal city of Reims and Troyes, renowned for its unparalleled luminosity. The former boasts the gilded trappings of monarchy, whereas the latter is enhanced by the kaleidoscope of colours streaming through the stained glass of its nine churches. Between the two lie 600 kilometres of waterways, 99,000 acres of forests abounding in game, two protected parks and four lakes, namely Der-Chantecoq. The steep valleys of the River Meuse and the banks of the Marne cutting across the Champagne vineyards are a pretty sight to behold. And the 500 or so rivers in Haute-Marne are a haven for anglers.
Travellers keen on ancient architecture will enjoy visiting the citadel of Rocroi, and the walled city of Langres, whose ramparts extend over three kilometres. They will be delighted to discover the medieval castle in Sedan, along with Reims Cathedral and Notre-Dame-de-l'Épine Basilica, both masterpieces of Gothic art. Each area features its own building materials and traditions: golden stones covered in black slate, chalk and red brick, cob and half-timbering or stark white stonework.
Tourists interested in regional produce will welcome the itinerary taking them down the Marne Valley, across the Montagne de Reims and along both the Côte des Blancs and Côte des Bars as it will put them in touch with more than sixty champagne producers: besides the celebrated bottles of "bubbly", you may also sample and purchase a wide range of tasty delicacies such as dry ham, andouillette de Troyes (sausage made from chitterlings) and cracknels from Reims.
